40년 바람
화창한 날에 갑자기 강한 바람이 붑니다. 전기톱을 밖에서 켜고 있는 듯한 날카로운 바람 소리가 마당을 훑고 지나갑니다. 등 떠밀듯이 들이닥친 거센 바람이 순식간에 머리를 봉두난발로 만들어 놓고, 거리에 제법 굵은 나뭇가지들은 성냥개비 부러지듯 꺾이고 얼기설기 엮어 놓은 양철집들이 한꺼번에 넘어지기도 합니다. 한낮인데도 새까만 구름에 깜깜해지고 세찬 바람이 천둥, 번개와 함께 비를 몰고 와 뿌려대기도 합니다. 이렇게 갑자기 지나가는 바람에 혼쭐이 나지만, 남아공 케이프타운에서는 이 바람에게 닥터라는 이름을 붙여줍니다. 일명 케이프 닥터(Cape Doctor)입니다. 왜냐하면, 도시의 모든 더러운 공기를 깨끗하게 청소하며 쓸고 가기 때문입니다. 케이프 닥터가 불고 가면 보이지 않던 저먼 산들이 또렷하게 눈에 들어옵니다. 공해 없는 청명한 공기를 마실 수 있는이유가 바로 가끔씩 난리 치며 불어대는 바람 때문이었습니다.“이 풍랑으로 인하여 더 빨리 갑니다”라는 찬송가(373장) 가사가 생각납니다. 세차게 불어 닥친 풍랑 때문에 정신이 없지만, 지나가고 나면 그것 때문에 가을 단풍이 붉게 물들듯이 신앙의 철이 들게 됩니다. 여기저기 오염되었던 죄악의 매연을 깨끗이 청소하고 풍랑이 지나간 후, 맑고 높아진 가을 하늘처럼 청명해진 공기를 들이마시면 속이 다 시원한 새 삶을 살게 됩니다. 그런 의미에서 풍랑도 우리의 고질병을 치료하는 닥터입니다.
재작년에 “예수, 굿닥터” 시리즈를 수요말씀여행 때 공부했습니다. 몽골의 한 선교사님이 인터넷으로 이 말씀을 접하시고, 몽골 사람들에게 들려줘야겠다는 심정으로 지금 몽골어로 번역 중이다고 소식을 알려왔습니다. 말들이 마음껏 뛰노는 끝없이 펼쳐지는 몽골 대지에도 닥터가 그것도 굿~닥터가 필요하다는 선교사님의 말씀에 우리 인생에 바람처럼 찾아오는 수술칼 같은 우리 주님이 죄악의 종양들을 제거하고, 시원하고 건강한 은혜의 세월들을 되찾게 하는 섭리를 확인하게 됩니다.
베델 항해 40년을 지나 맞이하는 추수감사 주일에 우리 모두가 시원한 바람을 호흡하는 이유는 40년의 세월에 가끔씩 세차게 불었던 바람 때문이 아니었을까 싶습니다. 40년 베델의 역사가 항상 순풍에 돛 달고 항해한 세월이 결코 아니었습니다. 케이프 닥터처럼, 풍랑으로 인하여 더 빨리 간다는 찬송가 가사처럼, 혹 타성에 젖어 기름 끼듯 둔해진 우리에게 기도의 무릎을 꿇게 하시며, 영적 게으름과 죄악의 오염들을 말끔히 청소하게 하는 바람들이 있었습니다. 초목을 뒤흔들며 검은 먹구름을 몰고 종말을 고하듯 찾아온 바람들은 굿닥터 예수님 때문에 오히려 우리 안에 거대한 부흥의 바람으로 바뀌었습니다. 이제 성숙기를 선포하는 베델 40년에 하나님께서 몰고 오시는 거룩한 바람에 죄악의 오염 씻어내고, 영적 대부흥의 역사를 새롭게 써가는 출발점이 되기를 기도합니다.

A strong gust of wind suddenly bursts through a sunny day. As if a power saw is grazing across my yard, I can hear the sharp wind. The strong wind at my back messes up my hair. The quite sturdy tree branches snap like matches and the wiry entanglement of homes come crashing down all at once. At high noon the dark clouds dim the day and the strong winds bring forth rain with thunder and lightning to spray across the land. As I am struck with sudden disorientation by the wind, in Cape Town of South Africa, this wind is regarded as an MD. ‘Cape Doctor’ is what they call her. It is because this wind cleans up all the dirty streets with her powerful gust. Once the ‘Cape Doctor’ passes by, even far off mountains that were not visible shines brightly in my eyes. The reason that I am able to breathe in clean air is because the winds blow rampantly to clean up the pollution.
I think of the lyrics, “Blest be the tempest, kind the storm, which drives us nearer home,” from the hymn ‘If, on a Quiet Sea.’ The sudden storms render us incapacitated at times, but it is necessary for the autumn leaves to bloom, much like our faith. You experience new life as the polluted nature of our sin ventilates with the passing of the storm allowing clean and clear air to breathe in, much like the skies of a lovely autumn day. In that sense, a storm is the doctor to heal our chronic diseases.
Last year, we had a message series titled, “Jesus, the Good Doctor,” during our Wednesday Night services. I heard news that a missionary to Mongolia caught wind of this series and with the heart to spread the message to the Mongolians is fervently translating the messages. From the words of the missionary that cry out the need of not only a doctor but a good doctor in the land that is filled with frolicking horses, I am able to stand resolute in God’s providence as the surgical winds blow into our lives to remove the tumors of sin to grant fresh and healthy years of grace.
I believe that the reason we are able to breathe fresh air on this Thanksgiving Sunday that we celebrate our 40th year anniversary is precisely because of the, at times, strong winds that blew heavily for 40 years. The past 40 years were not always a smooth sail. Like the Cape Doctor or like the lyrics of the hymn, for us that were stuck in a habitual routine, the winds brought us to our knees in prayer and cleansed us from spiritual laziness and sins of pollution. The winds that shake the lands and the dark clouds that seems like a precursor to the apocalypse suddenly become huge winds of revival because of the good doctor, our Lord, Jesus Christ. I pray that as we declare our age of maturity at the mark of our 40th year, the holy winds that God brings forth will clean the pollution of our sins and rewrite a new history of spiritual revival.
