크리스마스트리의 환영
신학교에서 장장 8시간의 강의를 마치고 밤늦게 귀가한 지난 월요일, 크리스마스트리가 깜깜한 저희 집 거실을 밝히고 있었습니다. 빤짝거리는 트리를 보며 제 마음도 빤짝거리기 시작했습니다. 늦게 귀가하는 저를 따뜻이 맞이해주는 느낌이었습니다. 저는 주로 밤늦게 귀가할 때가 많은데, 집이 껌껌한 것보다 불이 켜져 있는 것이 좋습니다. 다들 잠자리에 들었지만, 부엌 캐비닛 밑으로 켜놓은 은은한 불빛이 아직도 귀가하지 못한 저를 기다리는 듯 환영받는 느낌 때문입니다. 생각해보면 환영받는 느낌을 받을 때가 또 하나 있습니다. 집에 들어갈 때, 집에서 향긋한 냄새가 날 때입니다. 그래서 요리할 때, 초도 많이 켜 놓지만, 청소한 후의 깨끗한 냄새, 정리된 냄새가 환영받는 느낌입니다. 그리고 아침에 맡는 커피 향과 빵 굽는 냄새를 아주 좋아합니다. 큰 아이들 출근하느라 바쁘고, 막내딸 학교 가느라 정신없는 시간이지만, 새 아침을 여는 시간에 백뮤직으로 틀어놓은 클래식 음악과 찬양곡에 특별히 아침 운동하고, 출출한 아침에 핸드드립 커피 만들며 퍼지는 커피 향은 우울한 뉴스가 들려와도 긍정적인 하루를 출발하기에 충분합니다.사람이 오감을 가지고 있다고 하는데 그 중, 시각과 후각이 사람의 기분을 많이 좌우하는 것을 알게 됩니다. 그래서 주님도 우리에게 세상을 밝히는 빛이 되라 하셨고, 또한 그리스도의 향기라 하셨나 봅니다.
막내딸이 방으로 올라가면서 크리스마스트리 불을 끄고 올라갑니다. 왜 불을 끄냐고 했더니, 아무도 안 보는데 왜 불을 켜놓느냐고 합니다. 순간 전기세를 걱정하는가 생각했는데, 실용성을 운운하는 8학년짜리 딸이 아빠 감성에도 못 미치는 것을 보며, 아무도 안 봐도 우리 거실을 밝히고 있는 트리만 생각해도 기분 좋다고 말해주고 다시 불을 켜 놓았습니다. 우리 눈으로 직접 안 봐도 느끼는 것이 있습니다. 켜져 있는 트리를 상상만 해도 세상이 밝아지는 기분이 듭니다. 이것이 꿈의 효과입니다. 비전의 능력입니다. 그런 의미에서 거실에 홀로 켜져 있는 크리스마스트리의 실용성도 충분합니다. 모두 잠들은 고요한 이 밤에 거실에서 빛을 내고 있는 크리스마스트리가 있듯이 우리도 세상이 아무리 깜깜해도 반짝이는 빛이 되고 싶습니다. 크리스마스트리 꼭대기에 별을 달았습니다. 그 별은 세상을 비추는 상징입니다. 이 계절의 주인공이신 예수님께서 이 땅에 오실 때 동방박사들을 인도했던 그 별입니다. 그 이후로 별은 우리 주님의 별명입니다. 예수님은 소망 없는 이 깜깜한 세상의 별입니다. 그 별이 오늘 밤도 초롱초롱 빛나는 한, 우리는 언제나 두 팔 벌리신 주님의 품으로 환영입니다.

Last Monday, after a good 8 hours of continuous lecturing well into the evening at the seminary, I was well received at home by a bright Christmas tree in the corner of our dark living room. The brightness of the tree began to make my heart feel merry as well. It definitely felt like a warm reception as I arrived home late. I often come home at late hours, but I always felt that having the lights on is better than off. Although everyone is fast asleep, the kitchen counter light in its delicate warmth always feels like a welcoming embrace. Now that I think about it, there is another occasion where I feel the same welcoming embrace. It is when I come home to a welcoming fragrance. We light candles when we cook, but the reassuring fragrance of a clean and organized home is welcoming all in its own. I also love the smell of freshly cooked bread with my morning coffee. It’s a tumultuous time as our older children go off to work and the little one goes off to school, however, the ambiance of classical music with some contemporary Christian songs to add in some flavor engulfed in the smells of the drip coffee pour-overs after my morning exercise is more than enough to usher in a feeling of positivity even when hearing unfortunate news.
They say that humans have 5 senses, and that among the 5 senses the sense of sight and smell have the potential to shape our moods. Perhaps that is why Jesus told us to become the light of the world, and the fragrance of Christ Himself.
As my youngest daughter goes upstairs, she turns off the Christmas tree lights. When asking her why she turns the lights off, she retorts with saying that nobody is there to see the light, so why leave it on? Initially I thought she was trying to save on electricity, but after hearing the practical reasons from my 8th grade daughter that seemingly is not able to reach my degree of sensitivity regarding the tree, I told her as I was reigniting the flame, that even though there is no-one to see it, it is comforting to have it on. It’s about feeling it without needing to see it. I feel as if the world is emblazoning with lights at the mere thought of knowing the Christmas tree is lit. This is what dreams are all about. It’s the power behind the vision. With this particular type of practicality in mind, it is reason enough to leave the Christmas tree lights on. As everyone is fast asleep this night, the light being emitted from the Christmas tree in the living room reminds us that we should also strive to become light in the world no matter how dark and dreary it gets. We put a star at the top of the tree. It’s symbolic for the light of the world. It’s the star that led the wise men to our Lord Jesus Christ at the advent, this season. Afterwards, the star became used symbolically for the Lord. Jesus is the star for this hopeless, dark world. As long as the stars in the night sky keep shining bright, the arms of the savior are open wide.
