캄보디아에 체류하며 캄보디아 주민 3,000여명이 일하는 공장을 운영하던 한인이 최근에 공장문을 닫고 베트남으로 옮겨갔다고 합니다. 캄보디아인건비는 한 달에 $180 정도인데 반해 베트남은 $300이라고 합니다. 그럼에도 약 두 배나 되는 인건비를 지불하더라도 공장을 옮기는 이유는 캄보디아 공장이 번번이 날짜를 맞추지 못하기 때문이랍니다. 날짜 못 맞추어 나는 손해보다 인건비를 더 주더라도 정확하게 날짜를 맞추는 것이 더 경제적이라는 결론입니다. 캄보디아 일꾼들은 아무리 강조를 해도 성격들이 느긋하여서 출하 날짜를 못 맞추고 벌금을 물 때가 많았다는 것입니다.이번 캄보디아 방문 시 우리교회 파송 황현주 선교사님이 운영할 유치원 교사들과의 만남이 약속되어 있었습니다. 인근에 있는 중고등학교를 들러 한의사이기도 하신 황선교사님이 학교양호사로 섬길 양호실도 볼 겸 그곳에서 만나기로 했는데 나타나지를 않은 것입니다. 이 경험들이 그리 낯설지 않은 것은 우리도 시간을 정확히 지키지 않으면 ‘코리안 타임’이라는 말을 하면서 자랐기 때문입니다.어느 나라든 약속된 시간이 늦어질 때마다 그 나라의 ‘타임’을 이야기하며 경각심을 세우는 것을 봅니다. 이번에는 ‘캄보디안 타임’이었습니다.
특별히 교육사역을 펼칠 황선교사님 같은 분들이 하실 일이 많다고 느꼈습니다. 많은 인내심을 가지고 시간개념을 계몽할 뿐 아니라, 특별히 다음 세대의 소망을 바라보며, 캄보디아에 복음의 계절이 오기를 학수고대하는 기독교교육의 절대적 필요성을 보았습니다. 황선교사님의 캄보디아 비전은 이미 오래전부터 시작되었습니다. 단기팀으로 캄보디아에 들어가 섬기실 당시부터, 주일학교 선생님으로 20년 가까이 섬기며 아이들에 대한 마음이 남달랐던 황선교사님은 이미 캄보디아 어린이들을 마음에 품고 있었습니다. 우리 교회 협력선교사이신 싱글 여성 에스더 선교사님의 친구라도 되어 주기 위해 매년 한 달씩 휴가를 내어 상담하고, 선교사님의 사역을 측면에서 협력하다가, 결국은 본인이 아예 캄보디아의 어린이 사역에 뛰어드시게 된 과정은 하나님이 하시지 않았으면 가능한 일이 아니었습니다. 지금 진행되고 있는 유치원 건물 건축도 학사사역(dormitory ministry)을 해오고 계셨던 에스더 선교사님을 돕기 위해서 개인적으로 땅도 구입해 드리면서 같이 비전을 꿈꾸다가, 에스더 선교사님이 혼자 감당할 일이 아닌 것을 깨닫고 하나님의 소명을 받아 유치원 사역을 떠맡게 되셨습니다. 현재 다른 선교단체와 협력하여 건축 및 앞으로의 사역도 협력을 모색하고 있습니다. 깨끗하고 실용성 있게 지어질 유치원 건물은 어린이들의 산 신앙교육의 터전이며, 예배 장소와 의료 진료 및 각종 지역사회의 행사를 위한 선교센터로 운영될 것입니다. 우리 베델의 꿈이 또 한번 캄보디아 한 시골에서 다시 싹터 오르기를 기도합니다.

I was told that a Korean factory owner that was staying in Cambodia recently closed his factory and moved it to Vietnam leaving 3000 or so workers behind. The monthly cost of labor per person in Cambodia is around $180 US dollars while the same labor wages are $300 in Vietnam. The reason, however, as to why the factory was moved, despite having to pay over double the amount for labor wages, is because the factory in Cambodia was always behind schedule. The conclusion was reached that it was economically more efficient to pay more in wages and be on schedule as opposed to the losses of being behind schedule. It seems as though because Cambodian workers are so relaxed that even when pushed, they still miss the deadline for shipments and the company endured through penalties and fees.
During this particular visitation, we were scheduled to meet with the preschool teachers that will work with our church commissioned missionary, Hyun-Joo Hwang. We were supposed to meet after visiting the nurse’s room in a nearby middle/high school where she served as the school nurse with her skills in Korean medicine, but she was nowhere to be found. These experiences are not all too foreign for us as even we, when we are unable to keep the time, resort to saying “Korean time” and try to justify our tardiness. Whatever country we are in, whenever we feel like we’re going to be tardy, we speak of how we’re on “this country’s time” and arouse attention. This time we were on Cambodian time.
I felt that those in educational ministry like missionary Hwang have a lot to they need to do. Not just in patiently educating about the concept of time, but especially with the future of the next generation in mind, with an eagerness for a season of the Gospel to come upon this land, I felt the absolute need for having Christian education in Cambodia. The vision for Cambodia started a long time ago for missionary Hwang. From the short term trips she took while serving as a Sunday school teacher for 20 years, her heart for the children there was extraordinary and the children were already locked in her heart. It would not have been possible unless it was God’s will that missionary Hwang, while originally taking time off from work every year to visit our single missionary Esther to counsel her and help her in her ministry, when all of a sudden she ended up diving head first into childrens’ ministry in Cambodia herself. Originally missionary Hwang helped missionary Esther with the purchasing of land and the dreaming up of the vision behind the dormitory ministry for the preschool building that is currently in construction when she realized that this was something that missionary Esther should not bear alone and received God’s calling to serve the preschool there. Currently, she is finding routes to partner with other missions organizations for the construction project and further future ministry. The clean and practical preschool building that will be built serves the purpose for being an operating base for spiritual education while also being home to a place for worship, medical services and multi-purpose community events. I pray that the Bethel dream will blossom up again in that rural Cambodian town.
