여름방학이 끝나가고 우리 자녀들도 학교로 돌아가기 위한 준비를 서서히 할 때가 되었습니다. 교회적으로도 모든 수업이 개강을 준비하고 있습니다. 그러나 교회가 학교와 다른 것은 학교는 의무교육이지만, 교회는 싸인업을 하는 자원시스템입니다. 만약, 아무도 자원 신청을 하지 않으면 교회 훈련은 문을 닫습니다. 솔직히 아무도 자원하는 분이 없으면 교역자들은 육신적으로, 시간적으로 더 편합니다. 그러나 교역자가 있는 이유는 성도를 훈련하기 위함입니다(엡4:12). 성도님들이 훈련을 받지 않겠다면, 우리 교역자들은 본래의 목적을 수행하지 못하는 것입니다. 마치 건물을 짓기 위해서 건축업자를 고용했는데,건축자재가 없는 것과 비슷합니다.
교회는 단순히 사람들의 친교 모임이 아닙니다. 서로 좋아하는 사람끼리, 기호가 맞는 사람끼리 일주일에 한 번씩 만나는 사교(社交)모임이 아닙니다. 만약 교회에서 훈련을 받을 수 없다면, 말 그대로 사교(邪敎)가 될 수 있습니다. 교회에서 왜 훈련을 받아야 합니까? 그냥 일주일에 한 번 나와서 좋은 말씀 듣고 친구들 만나서 담소하고 돌아가면 안 되는 것입니까? 물론 됩니다. 교회의 기능에 친교도 있는 것이 분명합니다. 그러나 성도들이 살아가는 세상은 결코 만만치 않습니다. 우리가 보는 세상이 전부가 아니며, 우리의 삶에 많은 영역이 영적인 영향권에 있음을 기억해야 합니다. 반드시 영적 훈련, 말씀무장이 아니면 친근한 만남도 기대하기 쉽지 않습니다. 그래서 교회는 일당백의 강한 그리스도의 군사들을 훈련하는 훈련장이어야 합니다. 교회는 연약한 자의 보호소일뿐 아니라, 올림픽 대회에 나갈 선수를 훈련시키는 체육관 같은 곳이기도 합니다. 그래서 저희 베델은 제자훈련을 합니다. 베델제자훈련은 단순히 성경공부가 아닙니다. 지적인 욕구를 만족시키는 목적이 아니라, 그리스도의 제자를 키워내는 데 뜻이 있습니다. 성경을 아는 머리의 지식이 구체적으로 우리의 손과 발을 움직이도록 하는 훈련이라고 할 수 있습니다.
주일학교 시절, 교회 대항 성경퀴즈대회에 나간 적이 있습니다. 매일 저녁 따로 모여서 담당 목사님과 더불어 예상 문제지를 풀어가며 훈련을 받았던 기억이 있습니다. 자칫 잘못하면, 제자훈련을 퀴즈대회 나가는 선수를 만드는 것으로 착각할 수 있습니다. 그러나 제자훈련은 퀴즈대회 우승 제조기를 만드는 특수훈련이 아닙니다. 오히려 기술을 하나님이 원하시는 방법과 인격으로 쓰는 청지기적 삶을 배우는 것이라고 말하고 싶습니다. 부족한 사람들이 함께 모여서 삶을 나누고, 말씀을 통해서 도전받는 것을 실천으로 옮기며, 마음 깊은 것까지 기도의 제목으로 나누며 평생의 동역자를 얻는 축복의 훈련 과정이라고 말할 수 있습니다. 피아노 건반 위에서 매일 수시간 훈련을 하는 피아니스트가 피아노 위에서 자유하듯, 제자훈련은 주님과 동행하는 진정한 자유를 맛보는 기회가 될 것입니다.

It is now the time to slowly prepare for our children to go back to school as the summer ends. In the church we are preparing to open up all of our classes. The difference, however, is that school education is mandatory whereas church education is voluntary through a sign-up. So if nobody signs up, then church school closes its doors. To be frank, if nobody signs up, our pastoral leadership can have some leisure with time and energy. But the reason pastoral leadership exists is to train the saints (Ephesians 4:12). If our congregants decide not to receive any type of training at all, then we are not fulfilling our original purpose. It is almost like hiring a builder to build a house, but there is nothing to build.
A church is not simply a place to fellowship. It is not a glorified sa-gyo(social club) where you are able to meet with those that you are close with or share similar tastes. If you cannot receive training from a church then there is a good chance it can become a different sa-gyo(false religion). Why must you receive training within the church? Can’t we just come once a week to hear some good words and share in some chit-chat with our friends? I guess you can. Fellowship is an integral part of the church. However, the world that our congregants live in is not so easy. We must remember that what we see does not reveal everything and that a lot of areas in our lives are effected spiritually. If we are not spiritually trained and armed with Scripture it is hard to even expect such pleasantries as fellowship within the church. That is why the church needs to become the barracks that trains out many strong Christian soldiers. Church is not simply a refuge for the weak, but it is also a place that is comparable to olympic training grounds to well equip athletes for competition. That is why at our church, Bethel, we have discipleship training. It is not simply Bible study. It does not exist to satisfy our thirst for intelligence but rather it is a place to train Christ’s disciples. It is a type of training that enables us to move our hands and feet with the Biblical knowledge that is already within our heads.
When I was a youth, I remember once participating in a church wide Bible quiz competition. I remember every night I would meet with my pastor and get trained by answering practice questions. If you were to misunderstand you may think that discipleship training does the same thing by preparing students to excel in a Bible quiz competition. However, discipleship training is not some special training that is like a machine that creates product that can pass Bible quiz competitions. Rather, it is learning to be a faithful steward that is using their skills in a way and character that God wants. You can say that this training process will bring blessings or those that are lacking so they can share about life, while transferring the challenges they receive from the Bible into practice, being able to share their deepest vulnerabilities with lifetimes companions in the faith. Just like a pianist who spent countless hours sitting at a piano playing freely, discipleship training will become the very opportunity to taste the true freedom of walking with the Lord.
