전달되지 않은 복음은 복음이 아닙니다 (장창호 목사)

언젠가 저희 동네에 있는 한인마켓에 장을 보기 위해 아내와 함께 갔습니다. 모처럼 아내를 위해 봉사하기 위한 차원에서 같이 가게 되었습니다. 보통 남자들에게 가장 힘든 것은 아내와 함께 쇼핑을 가거나 장을 보러 가는 일입니다. 여자와 같이 쇼핑이나 장 보는 남자의 스트레스는 ‘마치 전쟁터에서 생사를 걸며 싸우는 것과 동일하다’는 얘기를 들었는데 정말 남자로서 100% 공감하는 말입니다. 저도 그런 맘으로 아내를 따라갔습니다.
한참 장을 보고 나오는데 입구에서 예쁜 전단을 나눠주며 열심히 찬양을 부르고 있는 사람들이 있었습니다. 두 그룹이었는데 한쪽은 교회를 나오라고 권하는 성도들이었고, 다른 쪽은 단기선교를 준비하는 젊은이들이었습니다. 이들은 찬양하면서 복음을 전하고 홍보도 하고 있었습니다. 그런데 제 앞서 가던 사람들의 대화를 우연히 듣게 되었습니다. “교회 다니는 사람들은 어쩔 수 없어! 정말 꼴불견이야.” 이 말을 듣는 순간 저도 모르게 제 얼굴이 빨개지는 것을 느꼈습니다. 마치 저에게 욕하는 것처럼 들리는 말이었습니다.
그러면서 ‘이런 분위기와 반응 속에서 복음을 전하기 힘들겠다’는 부정적인 생각이 들었습니다. 그런데 이 말이 정말 맞습니까? 결코, 아닙니다. 디모데후서 4장 2절에 보면, “너는 말씀을 전파하라 때를 얻든지 못 얻든지 항상 힘쓰라”고 사도바울은 디모데에게 권면했습니다. 사람들에게 이미지 좋고 평판 좋을 때만 전하는 게 복음이 아닙니다. 그렇지 않다고 할지라도 전해야 하는 게 복음입니다.
예수님께서 제자들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “이 천국 복음이 모든 민족에게 증언되기 위하여 온 세상에 전파되리니 그제야 끝이 오리라(마24:14)” 하나님 나라는 ‘복음’입니다. 복음을 뜻하는 헬라어 ‘유앙겔리온’은 ‘좋은 소식’이라는 뜻인데 소식은 전달을 전제로 합니다. 전달하지 않고 숨겨 두는 것은 비밀이지 소식이 아닙니다. 복음은 전달되지 않으면 복음이 아닙니다.
요즘 우리 성도들에게서 언제부터인가 세상을 향해 담대히 복음을 전하는 것이 빠져 버린 느낌이 듭니다. 교회에서 열심히 말씀연구와 토론은 하고 있지만 정작 복음이 교회라는 울타리 안에 갇혀있는 건 아닌지 돌아보게 됩니다. 복음을 전하는 것에 방해되는 우리 성도들의 잘못과 실수도 회개해야겠지만, 당연히 전해야 할 복음을 전하지 않는 우리도 회개해야 함을 느꼈습니다. 아까 말씀드린 대로 잠시나마 복음 전하는 것을 부정적으로 생각했던 저 자신부터 회개합니다. 혹시 여러분들은 어떠십니까? 복음을 부끄러워하고 계십니까? 세상으로부터 손가락질과 비난을 받는다고 복음까지 그런 취급을 받는다고 생각하면 안 됩니다. 복음은 전하지 않으면 복음이 아닙니다. 오늘도 우리에게 맡겨주신 자리에서 담대하게 복음을 선포하며 하나님 나라를 전하는 우리 베델의 성도님들이 되시길 기도합니다.
“A Stagnant Gospel is No Gospel at All”Rev. Chris Chang
Some time ago, my wife and I visited our local Korean market to go grocery shopping. It had been a while since I was able to help my wife in this fashion. After all, we all know how difficult it is for men to spend time shopping with their wives. I heard some place that the stress a man receives while shopping with his wife is like “fighting for your life in a war zone,” and I completely agree 100% with that statement. With that in the back of my head, I followed my wife.
After shopping for some time, I noticed a group of people singing praises while handing out these well made flyers. There were two groups there; One group was comprised of evangelists encouraging attending church, while the other group was comprised of young adults preparing for a short term mission trip. As they continued to praise, they kept on evangelizing and advertising their ministry. In the midst of this, I overheard a conversation by some people that were walking ahead of me. “What to do with these churchies? They’re despicable.” When I heard this, to my dismay, my face began turning red. It was as if they were cursing me directly.
At that instant I thought negatively, ‘how difficult it must be to evangelize in this atmosphere?’ Is this correct, however? No, it is not. In 2 Timothy 4:2 the Apostle Paul encourages Timothy by saying, “preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching(ESV).” The gospel is not something you preach when you are found favorable among the crowd, it is something you preach despite that.
Jesus taught his disciples, “and this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come(Matt. 24:14, ESV).” The kingdom of God is the gospel. The original Greek word behind the word ‘gospel’ is εὐαγγέλιον(pronounced: euangelion) meaning ‘good news,’ and the integrity behind the word lies on it being preached. If it is hidden and not preached, you can hardly call it ‘news.’ If the gospel is stagnant, it is not the gospel at all.
These days, I feel that the courageous spirit of evangelism has been lost in our congregation. We are diligent in Scripture reading and discussions, but it feels we are trapped in the paradigm that the gospel is church and church activities. Surely we must repent of our mistakes and misdoings in not preaching the gospel, but we must repent more to the fact that we are not fulfilling our duty to evangelize. As I mentioned earlier, I will take the first step in repenting for harboring even the least bit of shame towards evangelizing. What about all of you? Are you ashamed of the gospel? You must not think that the gospel is restricted by the ‘pointing of fingers’ and attacks that the world provides. If the gospel is stagnant and not preached, it is not the gospel at all. In this moment, in this place, I pray that we all become a congregation that preaches the kingdom of God by courageously proclaiming the gospel.
