우리 교회 조찬사역의 일환으로 어른들을 모시고, 미주 동부여행을 마치고 돌아왔습니다. 펜실베이니아 랭커스터에서 크리스천 뮤지컬 “요셉” 관람, 포코노의 가을 단풍에 젖었던 일, 미국을 미국 되게 했던 유서 깊은 도시 필라델피아의 자유의 종과 독립기념관 방문, 그리고 미국의 수도 워싱턴 DC의 백악관과 국회의사당과 링컨기념관을 찾았습니다. 특별히 한국에서 박근혜 대통령이 마침 워싱턴을 방문하는 중, 한국전쟁 참전용사 기념관(Korean War Veterans Memorial)의 방문은 뜻깊었습니다. 한국전쟁에 참가한 미군의 희생자 수가 적혀있었는데, 전사자 5만 4,246명, 부상자가 10만 3,248명이었습니다. 한국 군인의 전사자 수가 5만 8,127명인 것을 감안한다면 미군의 전사자 수는 어마어마한 희생이 아닐 수 없습니다. 입구 바닥에 이런 문구가 새겨져 있었습니다. “단 한 번도 들어본 적이 없는 나라를 위해, 단 한 번도 만나 보지 못한 백성들을 위해, 부름에 응답했던 우리의 아들과 딸들을 기립니다.”*
바로 그 글귀 앞에 마침 미국방문 중인 대한민국 대통령이 헌화한 화환이 있었습니다. 그 앞에서 기념사진을 찍는데, 대통령을 지키기 위해 온 경호원이 그곳을 지키고 있었습니다. 갑자기 다들, 특별히 권사님들이 경호원과 사진을 찍는다고 야단이었습니다. 조금 전까지만 해도 저와 사진을 찍는 것이 영광이니 뭐니 하셨던 분들이 완전히 얼굴을 돌리고, 말쑥하게 양복을 차려입은 미남 경호원에게 홀라당 맘이 빼앗긴 것입니다. 그래도 저는 믿~습니다. 권사님들이 잘 생긴 경호원에게 반해서 사진이라도 박아야 하겠다 한 것이 아니라, 대통령 대신이라는 명목하에 경호원도 반가워 사진을 찍어댄 것이었다고…
“자유는 공짜가 아니다”라는 또 다른 글귀가 새겨진 기념관에서 우리가 당연시하며 누리는 복들이 우리를 알지도 못하고, 우리에 대해 들어보지도 못한 자들이 피 흘려 줌으로 누리고 있다는 사실이 다시 한 번 옷깃을 여미게 했습니다. 3,000명이 채 안 되는 911 희생자 수를 생각해 보면, 16만 가까운 사상자 수를 우리 조국을 위해 뿌린 고귀하고 값진 생명을 어찌 갚아야 할지 가슴이 먹먹해 왔습니다.
오늘도 생전 들어보지도 못한 나라와 백성들을 위한 부름에 응답하여 나간 선교사님들이 있듯이, 우리도 주님이 쓰시겠다고 부르시면 죽어줄 가치와 이유가 있는지 따져보기 전에, “네!” 응답하고 뛰어나가 열심히 일했으면 좋겠습니다. 그러면 대통령 아닌 대통령이 보낸 꽃이라도 지키는 부름에 응답한 경호원이 반갑고 고마웠듯이 우리에게도 우리를 불러주신 예수님 때문에 사진 찍자고 몰려드는 그 날이 있을 것을 믿습니다.

As a part of our church’s ministry for retired elders’ families, along with our elderly congregants, we finished our east coast tour and came back. While in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, we enjoyed the Christian musical titled, “Joseph,” jumped to the Pocono mountains to see the autumn leaves, scurried over to Philadelphia to see the ‘Liberty Bell,’ as well as ‘Independence Hall,’ and finally arrived at our nation’s capital, Washington D.C., to visit the White House, Capitol Hill, and the Lincoln Memorial. It was especially meaningful when we visited the Korean War Veterans Memorial for President Park Geun Hye of South Korea was also visiting around that time. On the memorial there was a record of the number of American sacrifices that were made during the Korean war. There were 54,246 deaths, with 103,248 wounded. If you consider the Korean death toll to being 58,127, the number that the United States lost is considerable to say the least. On the floor of the entrance to the memorial, these words were written: “Our nation honors her sons and daughters who answered the call to defend a country they never knew and a people they never met.”
In front of those words a memorial wreath lay that the President of South Korea placed in remembrance. As we were attempting to take a picture together, there were many body guards that remained after protecting the President. All of a sudden, everyone, especially our overseers(Kwon-sa-nim) wanted to take pictures with them. It had not even been a minute when they were all anxious to take a picture with me. They did not think twice in turning their heads towards the handsome suit-wearing, gentlemen-like body guards. Even so, I have faith that it was not due to the sudden attraction towards the body guards that made them turn away, but for the opportunity to serve as a substitute for the President in appreciation.
I was reminded again of the blessings due to the sacrifices that were made made for a country they never knew and a people they never met by the words “Freedom is not Free,” that was written on another memorial. While thinking upon the less than 3000 that died during the 911 terror attacks, My heart stood still thinking about our debt to the near 160,000 wounded and dead that the United States men and women sacrificed for our nation.
Similarly, I wish that we would work hard in replying to God, ‘Yes!’ without pondering over death, when the LORD calls us to be used for his missional work like the many missionaries that are serving a country they never knew and a people they never met. If we do this, just like we were appreciative and joyous around not even the President, but the body guards that were guarding the flower wreath that the President placed, our LORD that called us, will be eagerly waiting to take a picture with us as well.
