몇 년 전에 강사로 오신 목사님과 식사할 기회가 있었습니다. 강단에서 듣지 못했던 말씀을 듣고 은혜받는 시간이었습니다. 많은 것을 듣는 중에 부목회자이기 때문에 배우고자 하는 심정으로 강사 목사님께 질문하였습니다. “지금까지 목회하시면서 무엇이 가장 좋으셨습니까? 잘 되든지 안 되든지 이것만은 꼭 해야 한다고 생각했던 것은 무엇입니까?” 목사님의 대답은 솔직하셨습니다. “글쎄요, 꼭 해야 한다고 생각하는 것들이 있었고, 그것을 붙들고 온 힘을 다했습니다. 여러 가지를 해보았는데 솔직히 지금은 잘 모르겠습니다.” 목회 현장에서 땀과 열정을 쏟아부으신 목사님이라는 것을 알고 있기에 그 답변은 저의 마음에 아련하게 다가왔습니다.
성도들에게도 가장 중요한 것이 무엇이냐고 질문하면 여러 가지로 답할 수 있을 것입니다. 가장 중요하다고 생각하는 것들을 많은 교회가 실행하고, 기대하는 만큼 열매가 없고 반응이 없을 때는 방향을 전환하여 다른 것을 시도하기도 합니다. 특별히 새해가 되면 그것을 발표하고 추진해 봅니다. 그러나 별다른 성과가 없으면 교회는 마치 표류하는 배와 같이 교회의 존재가치를 잃어버리고 그저 바람이 부는 대로 흘러가고 멈춰버립니다. 그런 의미에서 우리 교회는 참으로 건강한 교회입니다. 우리 교회는 아직도 교회의 본질을 붙잡고 그것을 위해 힘차게 전진하고 있기 때문입니다. 가장 중요한 것들을 핵심가치로 삼고 있기 때문입니다. 예배에 목숨을 걸고, 원색적인 복음을 선포하고, 소그룹을 통해 받은 은혜와 삶을 나누고, 영혼 구원을 위해 VIP 작정을 하고, 제자훈련과 전도폭발 훈련을 통해 증인이 되는 사역이 활발하게 이루어지고 있기 때문입니다.
새해가 시작되어 중요하게 생각하는 것을 꼭 이루고 열매 맺기를 바랍니다. 그것이 작심삼일이 되어도 다시 시도하고 또 도전하시기를 바랍니다. 절대로 포기하지 마시고 가장 중요한 것에 목숨을 걸어야 합니다. “오직 예수께만 시선 집중!”이라는 주제를 가지고 엘새를 은혜롭게 마쳤습니다. 지난 임직예배 때 주셨던 말씀이 인상적이었습니다. 개구리가 날아가는 곤충을 긴 혀로 잡을 수 있는 이유는 개구리의 눈이 한 가지만 보기 때문이라고 합니다. 목표물만 보는 것입니다. 우리 인간은 개구리보다 훨씬 영리하고 빠르게 움직일 수 있지만, 너무 많은 것을 보기 때문에 날아가는 곤충을 잡지 못한다고 합니다. 사랑하는 성도 여러분 올해는 개구리와 같이 오직 한 곳만 바라보시기를 바랍니다. “오직 예수께만 시선 집중!” 하셔서 풍성한 열매와 성취가 있기를 바랍니다.“Fixing Our Eyes on Jesus”Rev. A couple years ago, I had a chance to have a meal with a guest speaker at our church. It was a time of blessing from his sharing that was other than what he spoke at the pulpit. While listening to him, I asked him, intending to learn more as an assistant pastor. “What did you enjoy the most from your ministry? What do you think must be done in the ministry, whether it succeeds or not? He gave a very honest answer. “Well, there are musts and I have tried my best for it. I have tried many things, but I do not know now, frankly.” For I know that he was so passionate and worked hard for the ministry, his answer brought deep affection.
To the question, what is the most importance to Christians; the answer can come in many ways. Many churches try to achieve what they think is the most important, but they change when there is not much fruit to go on to another project. Especially when a new year begins with these tries come along. However, when there seems to be no result, the church loses its purpose just like a boat drifting without a destination or like the ones that stopped its voyage. In that sense, Bethel is a very healthy church. Bethel holds on to the essence of the church and strongly pushes forward. It’s because we take this is the most important value of the church. This essence is shown through the active ministries that are putting worship as a top priority, proclaiming the gospel primarily, sharing the blessings and life in the small group meetings, write out VIP list to save another soul, and being trained as a disciple and being the witness through the Evangelism Explosion program.
As the New Year begins I do pray that you will succeed in what you are planning to accomplish this year. Even though you could stop after three days, challenge yourself again and again. Never give up and be on your plan with everything you have. We are blessed by the Elijah Morning player with the theme of “Fixing Our Eyes on Jesus.” The message from the ordination service was memorable. Frogs can catch a flying bug because they are only focusing on one thing. It fixes its eyes on the target only. We, men, can move much faster and smarter than a frog, but can’t catch a flying insect because we see too many other things. Dear brother and sister in Christ, let’s only focus on Jesus just like a frog. Pray that you will have abundant fruit and accomplishments by “fixing your eyes on Jesus, only!”
