작년 크리스마스날 막내딸이 오빠와 언니에게 받은 선물은 책이었습니다. 선물을 열어보면서 책인 것을 안 막내딸이 함성을 지르며 좋아했습니다. 저는 책을 좋아하는 딸을 보고 함성을 지르며 좋아했습니다. 요즘 애들이 전자제품을 좋아하고 게임은 좋아해도 책을 좋아하는 것을 별로 보지 못하다가 막내딸이 책 선물을 받고 좋아하는 모습은 기쁘다 못해 신선하기까지 했습니다. “3일을 책을 읽지 않으면… 거울에 비친 자기 얼굴을 바라보기가 가증하다”고 송나라 시인 황산곡이 말했는데, 늘 책을 가까이했던 동생을 눈여겨본 언니, 오빠들이 알아서 책을 선물하는 것을 보며 괜히 흐뭇했습니다. 늘 책을 읽고 글을 쓰는 저이지만, 매주 돌아서면 다가오는 설교 준비와 이처럼 칼럼을 쓰는 것도 엄청 스트레스가 된다는 것을 아는 분들은 별로 없을 것입니다. “파리에선 그대가 꽃이다”의 손미나 작가는 “글쓰기는 80% 고통스러운 시간과 20% 기쁜 순간이 혼합된, 행복하기 힘든 비율의 작업이다”고 했습니다. 저는 이 말에 백 퍼센트 동의합니다. 그러나 힘든 글쓰기도 제가 20여 년 전 결심하고 주보에 쓰기 시작했기에 칼럼집을 두 권이나 출판하는 작은 열매가 있었습니다. 시작하는 것이 참 중요합니다. 알렉산더대왕의 스승인 고대 그리스의 철학자 아리스토텔레스(B.C. 384-322)가 남긴 말로 ‘시작이 반이다’라는 말은 참 유명한 명언입니다. 새해를 출발하면서 어떤 일을 시작하기를 주저하시나요? 책 10권에 성경 일독을 시작하면 어떨까요? 베델제자훈련에 도전해 보시면 어떨까요? 교회에서 섬길 자리를 찾아서 시작해 보시면 어떨까요? 시작이 반입니다.
새해의 시작 1월 1일이 주일이라는 것이 의미가 크다고 봅니다. 한 주간의 시작이 주일이라는 것이 한 주간도 주일예배의 토대 위에 세운다는 의미였는데, 1월 1일이 주일이니 2017년을 예배 위에 세운다는 큰 의미가 있습니다. 오늘 드려지는 예배에 올 한 해가 달렸다는 각오로 예배에 임하시고, 오늘 예배 중에 하나님의 음성을 들으며 하나님의 바다에 뛰어드시기 바랍니다. 세상에서도 ‘시작이 반이다’고 하는데, 우리에게는 하나님의 말씀이 있습니다. 그리고 하나님이 계십니다. 도와주실 것입니다. “내 사랑하는 형제들아 견실하며 흔들리지 말고 항상 주의 일에 더욱 힘쓰는 자들이 되라”(고전 15:58)고 하신 말씀을 기억합니다. “너희 안에서 착한 일을 시작하신 이가 그리스도 예수의 날까지 이루실 줄을 우리는 확신하노라”(빌 1:6)는 약속도 주어졌습니다. 찬송가 408장(새302장) 3절 가사에 “많은 사람이 얕은 물가에서 저 큰 바다 가려다가 찰싹거리는 작은 파도보고 마음 약하여 못 가네 언덕을 떠나서 창파에 배 띄워 내 주 예수 은혜의 바다로 네 맘껏 저어가라”고 도전하고 있습니다. 2017년은 닭띠해입니다. 새해 첫날 힘있게 울어대는 ‘꼬끼오’ 소리와 함께 다시 시작합시다.

Last Christmas, my daughter received a book for a gift from her older sister and brother. When realizing that her gift was a book as she was opening it, she exclaimed with joy. I also exclaimed with joy as well after seeing my daughter becoming so excited over a book. It was almost refreshing in a way to see my daughter so excited while we live in an age where children seek after electronics and games. The poet of Song Dynasty, Hwang San-Gok writes, “If I don’t read for three days, the reflection of my face is despicable,” and I felt strangely satisfied seeing her older siblings recognize my youngest’s love for reading and preparing a gift appropriately. I’m always reading and writing, but I bet there are few that really know the stresses that may come with sermon preparation and even from writing these columns. Mina Sohn, the author of “In Paris, You are the Flower” said, “80% of writing is done in pain, while the remaining 20% is done in joy resulting in a collective ratio that makes happiness difficult to achieve.” I agree 100% with this statement. However, as I have committed 20 so odd years ago to write a column every week, there has been fruit in the form of two collections of my column writing that has been published. Starting is extremely important. The ancient Greek philosopher, Aristoteles, who just so happened to be Alexander the Great’s teacher famously said, “a good start is half the battle.” As your new year begins, what new aspirations have you had? How about reading 10 books in addition to reading the Bible fully? How about participating in our discipleship training program? How about looking for a place to serve within our community? A good start is half the battle.
The new year beginning on January 1st holds a great significance. The fact that the new week always starts with Sunday is a calm reminder that your entire week is founded on the Lord’s day. So imagine the significance of starting the entire year of 2017 on the Lord’s day. I want you to worship today as if your entire year hangs on this day, while diving head first deep into God’s ocean of a voice. While the world is saying, “a good start is half the battle,” we have Scripture. We have our God. He will come to our aid. I remember 1 Corinthians 15:58 which says, “Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” The promise of Philippians 1:6 comes to mind as well; “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” The hymn, Launch Out!, issues a challenge saying, “and others just venture away from the land, and linger so near to the shore, that the surf and the slime that beat on the strand, dash o’er them in floods evermore. Launch out into the deep, let the shore-line go. Launch out, launch out, in the ocean divide. Out where the full tides blow.” 2017 is the year of the rooster. Let’s start the new year strong with the jarring crow of the rooster.
