지난주 아주사대학에서 제8차 한인세계선교대회가 있었습니다. 천여 명의 한인선교사님들이 참석한 가운데 인근 교인들도 함께하여 매 집회 3,000여 명이 운집하는 한인교회들의 선교잔치 한마당이었습니다. 다음 세기의 세계선교를 위한 디아스포라 교회들의 사명을 고취하고, 선교사님들을 위로 격려하며, 많은 도전적 정보와 은혜가 있었던 시간이었습니다. 그중 서구 기독교가 서서히 무대 뒤로 사라지고, 2020년에는 기독교 인구의 절반 이상이 아프리카인들이라는 통계가 있었습니다. 100년 전만 하더라도 기독교 인구의 65%가 유럽, 북미 백인이었습니다. 그런데 지금은 중국과 남미가 대세이며 앞으로는 아프리카가 된다고 하니, 하나님의 촛대는 계속해서 서진(西進)하는 것이 맞기는 맞나 봅니다.왜 지금의 북미는 점점 기독교의 보금자리를 잃어버리고 있을까 궁금했습니다. 기독교가 들어간 지역은 틀림없이 경제적으로도 부흥했던 것이 사실입니다. 기독교는 단순히 한 개인의 영혼 구원뿐 아니라, 공동체의 안녕과 사회적 구조 개혁에도 항상 앞장서 왔습니다. 못 살던 나라가 복음을 받아들이면서 잘 사는 나라로 발전하는 것은 복음의 부수입과 같은 축복이었습니다. 그러나 사도바울이 마게도냐의 환상을 본 이래, 계속해서 서진하는 복음의 행진은 브레이크가 망가진 듯합니다. 로마가 그랬고, 그리스 정교회가 그랬고, 유럽의 교회가 그랬습니다. 왜 복음이 꽃을 피우고, 살만한 세상이 되면 그 자리를 떠나 움직이는 것일까요? 유럽은 이제이슬람화 되어가는 위기에 놓여있고, 불같이 일어나던 중국과 인도의 부흥도 초읽기에 들어갔다는 관측이 나오는 것은 무슨 이유일까요? 많은 선교학자들이 예상하는 대로 앞으로 복음은 아프리카 시대를 맞이한다고 생각하는 이유는 무엇일까요?
아프리카에 복음의 시대가 오는 것은 당연히 우리의 기도할 바이며, 그렇게 된다면 감사할 뿐입니다. 문제는 복음의 시대가 온 후, 어떻게 하나님의 촛대가 옮겨지지 않도록 복음의 전성기를 지속하느냐입니다. 복음의 전적인 능력으로 사는 그리스도인이 되기 위해서 우린 계속적으로 복음 앞에 적나라하게 서는 훈련이 필요합니다. 끊임없이 ‘오직 의인(성도)은 믿음으로 말미암아 살리라’ 하는 복음의 메시지 앞에서 지금의 생활이 복음의 터치 안에 있도록 해야 합니다. 지금도 생활형편이 좀 더 나아지기 위한 방편으로 복음을 이해하면 안 됩니다. 단순히 내 문제를 해결해 주는 도구로 복음을 간주한다면, 문제 해결 후 복음은 또 우리의 자리를 떠날지 모릅니다. 복음이 우리에게 주는 외형적인 축복을 하나님이 우리를 향한 사랑의 사이즈로 삼는 순간, 복음은 남을 판단하는 도구로 전락하고 나를 증명하는 무기로 전락하게 되어 있습니다. 마치 그리스의 정교회 수도원 같이 그 누구도 오를 수 없는 암벽꼭대기에 세워 놓고 그 위용은 자랑하지만, 절벽 아래 사람들을 한없이 기죽이는 복음이 되면 그때부터 하나님은 촛대를 움직이시는 것 같습니다.

Last week, the eighth annual Korean World Mission Conference was held at Azusa Pacific University. Amidst the thousand missionaries, give or take a few, that were participating, neighboring churches helped boost the total to three thousand every night as the conference became the festival grounds for the gathering of the missional Korean church. A new mission from the diaspora churches was instilled for the next century while encouraging and comforting the missionaries that led to a time of motivational information and grace. Within that new information, we learned that the western world of Christianity is moving behind the curtains with the anticipation that the African church will become more than half of the entire world Christian population by 2020. Even just one hundred years ago, within the entire world Christian population, sixty five percent was composed of Europeans or North American Caucasians. It is correct to say that the candlelight of God is continually moving west when we consider the tide passing through China and South America with Africa right on their heels.
I was curious however as to the reason of why North American Christianity is slowly losing its place. Wherever there was Christianity, there was economic revival. Christianity affected not only one individuals salvation, but stood on the forefront to uphold a community’s peace and social structure reformation. A poor nation developing into an economically viable nation was an additional blessing. But from Paul’s vision of Macedonia it seems as though the brakes of the movement of the Gospel are broken. Rome, the Greek Orthodox church, the European church all are evidence of the Gospelization of a region, the growth of a region and the concurrent departure of the Gospel message. What can the observation that while Europe is facing the dangers of an ‘Islam’ification, the countdown for China and India’s revival beginning actually mean? What is the reason as to why many scholars of missiology are thinking that the Gospelization efforts will migrate towards Africa.
The Gospelization of Africa is one of our greatest prayers, and if it is fulfilled, thanksgiving is all that we will feel. The problem is how to continue to keep the golden age of the Gospel in a nation, and leave God’s candlestick in that region. We must continue to remain vulnerable in the Gospel light if we wish to become Christians living in the full power of the Gospel. Our lives now must be within the touch of the Gospel fully incorporated with a never ending spirit of the gospel message of, ‘the righteous(believers) shall live by faith.’ You may consider it an expedited means to living a better life. If you simply use the Gospel as a tool for immediate help, the Gospel may move again. The moment you measure the weight of material blessings as the weight of God’s love for you, the Gospel is degraded as such to a tool for judgment and a weapon for self-righteousness. It becomes much like the Greek Orthodox monasteries, placing the gospel in an unreachable place and while celebrating in its high esteem, the people below lose their spirit. That is precisely when God moves His candlestick.
