복음의 기적, 베델의 일본어예배
제가 베델에서 사역을 시작했을 때, 영상으로 저를 환영해주시는 분들이 계셨습니다. 그분들 중에 다무라 고조 장로님이 제일 인상적이었습니다. 그것도 한국말로 저를 환영해 주신 것이 마음에 남았는데, 이렇게 우리 교회 일본인 성도님들과 인연은 시작되었습니다. 3부예배 때, 뒤쪽에 앉아 같이 예배드리며,당시는 박은성목사님의 누님의 통역으로, 지금은 박목사님의 통역으로 이어폰을 끼고 열심히 찬양하고 기도하며 예배에 동참하는 성도님들의 모습은 눈물나도록 감격스러웠습니다. 또 하나 가슴에 남는 것은 이시야마 신타로 집사님 가족 네 분이 몽땅 세례를 받는 일이 벌어진 것입니다. 정말 하나님의 역사가아니면 설명할 수 없는 일이 일본인 성도님들에게 일어나고 있습니다. 그렇게 1주년 일본어예배를 시작했는데, 지난주 3주년 기념예배를 드리게 된 것입니다. 지금은 30명가량의 일본인 성도님들이 함께 예배드리고 계시며 우리 베델에서 가장 모범적인 성도님들로 예배와 섬김 봉사에 나서고 계십니다.
저에게 일본은 늘 멀고도 가까운 나라였습니다. 한일관계는 늘 예민했고, 독도 영토문제를 위시하여 위안부 문제 등 양 나라가 스포츠 축구를 해도 민감한 반응은 어찌할 수 없었습니다. 그러나 우리 베델에게 일본어예배는 가슴 가장 가까운 곳에 있는 예배입니다. 저의 베델의 3년이 일본어예배 3년과 같이 가듯,일본인 성도님들이 우리 식구라는 것이 제가 자랑하는 목록 톱입니다.
정치적으로 늘 한국, 일본, 중국이 앙숙의 관계로 으르렁거리지만, 매 주일 우리 교회는 한국, 일본, 중국이 한 캠퍼스에서 같이 예배를 드립니다. 저는 농담처럼 “정치적으로 풀 수 없는 세 나라의 문제가 있다면 우리 베델에서 푼다”라고 말합니다. 그러나 농담처럼 한 말이지만, 하나님은 정말로 베델을 통해서 일어나는 복음의 역사를 통해 인간이 만든 담을 허무는 작업을 하셨습니다.
은퇴하신 손인식목사님 때 유명한 일화가 있습니다. 그때, 한국과 일본이 한창 독도 영토문제로 들끓고 있었을 때였습니다. 일본 총리가 일본땅이었다고 아무리 주장해도 독도는 일단 정치적, 역사적 문제에 앞서 한국인 자존심의 문제이기에 예민하지 않을 수 없는 이슈였습니다. 이때 손목사님이 다무라 고조 장로님을 단 위로 불러내어 교인들 앞에서 공개적으로 물었다고 합니다. “다무라 장로님, 독도가 누구 땅입니까?” 온 회중이 얼음처럼 얼어붙는 순간이었습니다. 그런 질문을 하는 손목사님에게도 놀랬지만, 이러지도 저러지도 못할 난처한 상황에 선 다무라장로님이 베델“한인”교회 앞에서 뭐라 답할지 모두 긴장된 순간이었습니다. 이때 다무라장로님은 “독도는… 하나님의 땅입니다”라고 응답했습니다. 이 응답은 명답 중에 최고였습니다. 니 꺼 내 꺼를 나누는 답이 아니라, 일본과 한국을 하나로 묶는 답이었습니다. 복음의 응답이었습니다. 우리는 오늘 지진 만난 일본을 위해서 작지만 위대한 복음의 반응을 보일 기회가 왔습니다. 우리 베델 식구 일본인 성도님을 생각하며 동참해 주시기를 바랍니다.
The Miracle of the Gospel, Bethel’s Japanese Worship ServiceRev. Bryan Kim
When I first started ministry at Bethel, there were those that welcomed me through a video message. Elder Kozo Tamura left a strong impression on me. Particularly because the welcoming was done in Korean. All in all, this is how my relationship with our Japanese congregants began. I was moved to the extent of tears during our third service, watching our congregants with ear phones in their ears listening to, at the time Pastor Eunsung Park’s elder sister translate for them, and now Pastor Park himself translating, while praising, praying and participating in worship wholeheartedly. Another incident that is close to my heart is when all four members of the Ishiyama family were baptized all at once. If we were not to credit God’s active working in our Japanese congregants lives, there would be no way to explain it. This is how the first anniversary passed, and lo and behold, the third anniversary was just last weekend. Presently, we have 30 Japanese congregants worshiping with us, and have become the role models in our church for worship and serving.
For me, Japan was always close, yet so far away. The relationship between the Japanese and the Koreans have always been sensitive, starting with territorial command issues with Dokdo Island, implications regarding ‘comfort women,’ and it was difficult to do much about the sensitive responses that would even occur during sports/soccer matches. However, the Japanese ministry within our church is closest to my heart. Just like our 3 years together coincides with Japanese ministry’s 3 years, I boast that at the top of my list lies our Japanese congregants and how they have become our family.
Politically, Korea, Japan and China seems to always be growling with discord towards each other. However, every Sunday, Koreans, Japanese and Chinese alike share one campus and worship together. As a joke, I want to say that if there is an issue that cannot be solved in politics, then it can be solved at our church. But all jokes aside, God has most definitely been using Bethel to bring about the Gospel’s transforming work in making futile the walls established by man.
There is a famous story that occurred during Reverend Sohn’s tenure. At the time, the problem with territorial issues surrounding Dokdo Island was at its peak. After the Japanese Prime Minister asserted that Dokdo Island was Japanese territory, putting historical and political issues aside, this issue became a sensitive issue due to the problems of pride that Koreans have. At that time, Reverend Sohn called up Elder Kozo Tamura to the pulpit and in front of the entire congregation asked him, “Elder Tamura whose land is Dokdo Island?” The entire congregation froze for that moment. Everyone became nervous and dismayed at not only Reverend Sohn in asking that question, but at how Elder Tamura would reply in such an awkward situation, especially at Bethel KOREAN church. At that instance, Elder Tamura replied, “Dokdo Island is God’s land.” This was perhaps the greatest reply I have ever heard. It was not divisive, but it was cohesive for Korea and Japan. It was a Gospel reply. We havealbeit a small but wonderful opportunity to give a Gospel reply to an earthquake suffering Japan. Let us think of our Japanese congregants, our Japanese family, and participate together.
