이번 신학강좌에 같이 오신 사모님 중의 한 분은 배 타고 브라질에 이민 갔다가 미국에서 대학공부를 하신 분이라 아직도 한국말이 능수능란하지 못하신데, 한국에서 목회하던 시절 서툰 한국말 때문에 일어난 한 에피소드를 들려주셨습니다. 듣는 우리 모두는 포복절도하며 얼마나 웃었는지 모릅니다. 사건은바람 쐬러 가자는 교회 집사님의 초청을 받은 사모님이 남편 목사님에게 이를 전달하는 과정에 일어났습니다.“여보!”“응.”“김 집사님이 바람?!… 피우러 가자고 했는데, 바빠서 못 간다고 했어요.”“^^ 못 간다고 잘했어.”한국말에 ‘바람’과 함께 쓰는 표현이 참 다양하다는 생각이 듭니다. “바람맞다” “바람피우다” “바람 쐬다” “바람 타다” “바람 일다”에서 “바람잡이” “바람둥이”까지 눈에 보이지 않는 바람으로 복잡미묘한 상태를 잘 표현합니다. 교회 안에서도 “성령의 바람” “영적 새바람” 등 심심치 않게 사용합니다.
교회설립 40주년을 맞이하면서 개최된 ‘한여름의 시원한 신학강좌’는 한마디로 무더운 여름에 부는 시원한 바람이었습니다. 과연 이러한 포맷의 집회가 가능할까 조심스러웠지만, “사람이 마음으로 자기의 길을 계획할지라도 그의 걸음을 인도하시는 이는 여호와”(잠 16:9)이신 것처럼 이번 집회도 정확하게 그랬다고 생각합니다. 신학강좌를 하더라도 지명도 있는 교수 한 분만을 모시고 하는 것은 가끔 있어도 이번처럼 여러 강사분을 모시고, 그것도 교회 세팅에서 일반 성도를 대상으로 하는 것은 본 적이 없기 때문입니다. 각 강사의 전공과 강의 방향도 제각기라 자칫 더 혼돈을 가중할 수 있었는데, 강의들이 오히려 서로를 보완하고 강화하는 효과가 있으면서 전공분야를 흥미진진하게 피력했다고 생각합니다. 강의를 듣는 회중들도 마치 신학교 안에서 명강의를 들으며 은혜받는 시간이었으며, 전형적인 부흥회 때 받는 은혜와는 또 다른 맛의큰 은혜를 받는 시간이었습니다.
어느 성도님의 패널 질문처럼 이번 집회가 “울컥하는 것이 없었다”고 했지만, 우리의 영혼을 만지고 세우는 하나님의 터치가 “울컥”뿐 아니라, 밤하늘에 반짝이는 별처럼 우리의 마음속에 반짝이는 깨달음 속에도 있었습니다. 감성에 쉬 흔들릴 수 있는 우리의 심지를 말씀에 깊이 뿌리는 내리는 도전이 있었다고 믿습니다.
성숙을 향해 도약하는 40주년을 맞이하는 이즈음에 말씀에 기초한 새로운 영적 바람이 일어나야 할 때라 믿습니다. 이번 신학강좌는 어쩌면 전형적 부흥회로부터 성숙을 향한 또 다른 신선한 ‘바람피움’이었다고 생각합니다.

One of our lecturer’s wives that visited our church this past weekend told us a story of a particular episode in her life that was due to her slightly inept skills in the Korean language for she immigrated to Brazil early and studied in the States. She nearly split us open with laughter. The critical part of the story is when she spoke to her pastor husband after a particular church deacon asked her if she would like to get some fresh air(Baramssoereo).“Honey.”“Yes?”“Deacon Kim asked me if I would like to go for “Baram-ppiwooreo”(meaning, to have an affair), but I told him that I was busy!”“Good thing you said that!”
In Korean, the usage of the word ‘wind'(Baram) is quite diverse. To be fooled(Baram-maata), to have an affair(Baram-pida), to get some fresh air(Baram-ssoeda), getting swept up in trends(Baram-taada), initiating a trend(Baram-ilda), etc. and so on. Even in the case of diverting attention(Baram-jabby) or being scandalous(Baram-koon) displays a notion of complicated delicacy. Even within the church we use the expressions ‘the wind of the Holy Spirit,’ or a ‘a new spiritual wind.’
As we creep up on our church’s 40 year anniversary, the ‘Midsummer’s Cool Theological Lecture Series,’ is literally a breath of fresh air through the intense summer heat. I had my reservations as to if this sort of event would stick, but just as it says in Proverbs 16:9, ‘The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps(ESV),’ I feel this event went accordingly. It is precisely because I have never seen a case where we were able to invite not one but four different renowned speakers to speak at a church to regular church congregants. Each speaker in his own respective way has his own specialty and direction that could have aggravated some confusion, but the lectures were supplemental to each other and created a powerful effect that made each subject matter all the more interesting. Our congregants that heard these lectures also could visualize themselves in a real lecture hall and were greatly blessed in a different way from a typical revival night.
One church member said as a question to the panel that there was no particular, ‘surge of emotion,’ but the touch of God that moves our hearts is not only simply a ‘surge,’ but it is also within the bright discoveries of our hearts that shine like the stars in the night sky. I believe that it was a time where Scripture was deeply rooted over a will that is shaken by sensitivity.
I believe that it is time for us to feel a new refreshing spiritual gust rooted on Scripture as we await our 40 year anniversary leap towards a direction of maturity. As a breath of fresh air, I feel that this lecture series was a leap in the direction of maturity from a typical revival night.
