지난봄에 MIT 수학여행 갔을 때 일입니다. 모자 수집광 정도는 아니라도 나름 모자에 관심이 많기에 관광상품점에 들어가면 제일 먼저 살피는 것이 모자입니다. 때마침 한 모자가 제 눈길을 사로잡았습니다. 초록색의 이파리가 기계자수로 화려하게 수 놓인 모자였습니다. 당장에 사서 썼더니 보는 분마다 멋있다고 칭찬하는 것이었습니다. 그런데 그 다음 날 제 모습을 본 미국사람들이 다들 씩 웃으면서 엄지손가락을 치켜드는 것이었습니다. 그 순간 제 마음에 ‘음, 저 사람들도 보는 눈은 있군!’ 하면서 은근히 기분이 좋았습니다. 그날 이후 저는 기회 있을 때마다 그 모자를 쓰고 다녔습니다.
그러던 중 8월 말에 목회실지원팀이 마련한 목회자 가족 만찬 자리에 그 모자를 쓰고 나갔더니, 한 2세 인턴이 다가와서 서툰 한국말로 “목사님, 그 모자 디자인이 무슨 뜻인지 알아요? 그 모자 디자인은 마리화나 잎을 형상화한 거예요. 즉 ‘난 마리화나를 좋아해!’라는 메시지를 담고 있어요.” 이렇게 말하면서 씩 웃으면서 저를 보는 것이었습니다. 그 웃음에는 ‘혹시, 목사님도…?’ 하는 뉘앙스가 담겨 있었습니다. 뒤를 돌아보았더니 2세 목회자들이 모두 어깨를 으쓱이며 이구동성으로 “어허!” 하며 웃는 것이었습니다. 어이쿠, 이렇게 망신스러울 수가! 정말 ‘무식이 용감하다’는 말이 바로 이럴 때 쓰이는구나 싶었습니다.
때마침 지난달 말씀묵상 본문이 호세아였는데, 제 눈을 사로잡는 말씀이 반복적으로 나왔습니다. “내 백성이 지식이 없으므로 망하는도다!”(호4:6) “우리가 여호와를 알자! 힘써 여호와를 알자!”(호6:3) 그 옛날 이스라엘 백성들은 자신들이 하나님을 잘 섬기는 사람들이라고 생각했지만, 실상은 정반대로 하나님을 대적하는 삶을 살았다는 것이 호세아 선지자의 통렬한 지적이었습니다. 그리고 그 근본적인 원인은 다름 아닌 “무지(無知)”때문이라는 것입니다. 지식의 근본은 “여호와 하나님을 경외하는 것”입니다(잠1:7). 그럼 하나님을 경외한다는 것이 무엇일까요? 어떤 분들은 예배와 헌신으로 생각하기도 합니다. 물론 맞습니다. 그러나 그것은 열매요 결과이지 경외의 본질은 아닙니다. 여호와를 경외함의 본질은 하나님의 하나님 되심 곧 하나님이 누구시며 그분의 뜻이 무엇인지를 바로 아는 것입니다. 바로 알면 바르게 믿고, 바르게 믿으면 바르게 순종하게 되어 있습니다. 그래서, 호세아 선지자가 내린 처방이 바로 “여호와를 알자! 힘써 여호와를 알자!”입니다.
여러분은 지금 어떻습니까? 하나님을 바로 아는 지식 없이 자신의 전통과 오랜 신앙관습, 그리고 순간순간의 개인적인 느낌에 의지하여 신앙생활 하고 있지 않습니까? 그러면, 열심을 내면 낼수록 하나님 보시기에 너무나 부끄러운 열매를 거두게 된다는 것입니다. 성도가 서지 말아야 하는 자리에 지금 서 있지는 않은지, 말씀의 거울을 통해 지금 자신을 비추어 보아야 할 때입니다. 이왕 믿음생활 하는 것, 제대로 해야 하지 않겠습니까?
“Ignorance is Bliss”Rev. Hyun Kwon Koh
This is an account of the events that unfolded last spring during an MIT field trip. I am not a crazed hat collector, however, I do enjoy wearing hats, so my focus immediately went to the collection of hats on display at a gift shop. I found a hat that caught my attention. It was a hat that had a beautiful green leafed plant etched into it. The next day, I was outside wearing it, there were many people that gave me a smile while putting their thumbs up. I thought to myself, “those people sure know what’s in style,” and I had a pleasant day. After that day, every opportunity I got, I put on that hat.
After some time, I attended a picnic that was held by the Ministry Support Team. At that picnic, a second generation Korean intern, in his broken Korean, giggling, said this to me. “Do you know what the design of that hat represents? The design on your hat signifies a marijuana leaf. You are basically saying you condone marijuana.” The nuance of his giggling seemed to suggest that I was an avid user myself. As I turned around, I witnessed other second generation pastoral staff members giggling at me. Half embarrassed to death, I thought to myself, indeed, ignorance is bliss!
Incidentally, the passage that I had been studying at the time was from Hosea. Repeatedly, I thought of Hosea 4:6 which says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…” Hosea also says, “Let us know; let us press on the know the Lord.” Hosea’s assertion was at that time, the Israelites believed they were living a life serving the LORD, when they had actually been living the opposite, going against the LORD. The fundamental cause behind it was ignorance. The root of all wisdom is “revering the LORD.(Prov. 1:7)” Then what does it mean to revere the LORD? Some believe it is through worship and serving. However, that is the fruit or result of reverence, not the essence. The essence of reverence is knowing the LORD and His will in your life. Knowing leads to faith, and faith leads to obedience. Therefore, Hosea’s prescription was for the Israelites to “know the LORD! Press on to know the LORD!”
How about all of you? Are you living a life of faith that is dependent on momentary reflections and a habitual pattern of tradition without truly knowing the LORD? If this is the case, no matter how much you strive for Him, the fruits that you bear will be inadequate. As congregants, we need to check ourselves, and look at our reflection through the Word of God. If you decided to walk this route, should it not be done the correct way?
