이제 일주일 남았습니다. 기독교의 최대의 명절, 부활절이 일주일 남았습니다. 어느 분이 최고의 부활절을 만끽할까요? 죽음에서 부활하신 예수 그리스도는 누구를 위해 부활하셨을까요? 다시 살아나신 예수님은 어떤 자들에게 소망이 되었을까요? 이런 생각을 하면 이번 부활절에 수지맞는 사람이 누군지 짐작이 갑니다. 사랑하는 성도님들의 가정에 부활의 기쁨과 영광, 그리고 소망이 넘치기를 기도합니다. 그리고 잊지 마십시오. 새생명축제 역시 일주일 남았습니다.
어느 성도님께서 이런 말씀을 하셨습니다. “이번 부활주일에 초대해서 오시는 분이 있는데, 교회는 생전 처음입니다. 그러니, 목사님, 설교 망치시면 안 됩니다.” 제가 그 말씀을 듣는데, 얼마나 눈물이 나든지요. 눈물을 삼키느라 혼났습니다. “한 사람이 한 영혼을 하나님께, 아멘!”을 외치며 시작했던 3년 전 엘리야 특별새벽기도부터 오늘 이 시간에 이르기까지 우리 안에 한 영혼을 향한 몸부림이 있기를 간절히 소원했는데, 드디어 서서히 데워지는 곰국처럼, 우리 교회 안에 그 복음의 열정들이 시작되었다고 생각하니 눈물이 났습니다. 신년을 여는 새벽기도회를 기점으로 부활절까지 달려오는 여정 속에 한 영혼이라도 살릴 수 있다면 여한이 없겠다는 심정으로 오픈셀을 하고, 초대장을 만들고, 기도카드를 만들어 기도하고, ‘드릴선데이’를 하며, 신애라 집사님을 초대하고 드디어 일주일 남았습니다. 이제 남은 것은 제가 설교만 망치지 않으면 된다는 이 말이 엄청나게 부담은 되지만, 왠지 고맙고 싫지가 않습니다.
한 영혼을 향한 마음으로 먼저 믿는 자들이 총력을 기울여 예배드리는 날이 일주일 남았습니다. 낯선 분을 보시면 한 번 더 미소 짓고 친절한 마음을 가져주십시오. 별거 아닌 것 같은 우리의 친절에 저들의 영혼이 걸려 있습니다. 차를 주차하고, 운전하여 나가는 모습도 한 번만 더 여유 있게 양보하며 해주십시오. 내가 주차하는 모습에 한 영혼이 달려 있을 수 있습니다. 나의 예배드리는 자세도 한번 점검해 주세요. 누가 만약 내가 예배드리는 모습을 본다면 어떤 느낌이 들지 생각해 보면 고쳐야 할 부분이 생각날지 모릅니다. 무대 위에 오르는 성가대원과 오케스트라 단원들도 찬양하는 모습, 연주하는 모습, 얼굴 표정 등도 조금은 신경 써주세요. 주차장에서 셔틀버스에서 그리고, 식당 앞에 줄을 서 있는 우리의 모습도, 카페를 이용하는 우리의 매너도, 식당과 코트야드에 자리 잡고 식사하는 우리의 얼굴도, 한 영혼을 향한 마음으로 한번은 생각해 주세요. 이렇게 작은 배려가 모여서 일주일 후에 일어날 기적의 부활을 만들어 보십시다. 정말 다음 주일 만큼은 저만 설교 망치지 않으면 되는 날이 되면 좋겠습니다.

“Reverend! Don’t Ruin the Sermon!”Rev. Bryan H. Kim
We now have one week remaining until the greatest of all Christian holidays, Easter, comes into realization. What type of person would be the one to enjoy this occasion? Who did Jesus rise from the dead for? If you think upon the hope that Jesus became for all mankind, it is not difficult to foresee who ultimately benefits from this. I pray that in your families the joy and glory of the resurrection overflows with hope. But please do not forget, New Life Festival is one week away as well.
One of our congregants said this to me. “I invited a friend to our New Life Festival, but it is going to be their first time to church. So Reverend, you must not ruin the sermon!” I started tearing up instantly. It was difficult to hold back the tears. I earnestly hoped that ever since three years ago from our Elijah Special Morning Prayer when we would scream, “One Person, for One Soul, for One God, Amen!” we would be torn within wanting to evangelize, and when realizing that like a warm soup reaching full potential that our church is finally realizing the passion of the Gospel message, I could not help but tear up. Within the journey from the Special Morning Prayer that started the new year to this point in Easter, we did not regret in working hard during our Open Cell, making invitations, creating prayer cards and praying, struggling through Drill Sunday, inviting celebrity Shin Ae Ra, and now there is only one week remaining. Although the burden of not ‘ruining the sermon’ is strong, for some reason, I am thankful and do not dislike it all that much.
There is only one week remaining until the passionate worshipers can worship with all their might with their hearts geared towards the One Soul. Smile and be courteous to any newcomers that day. It may not seem like much, but their soul hangs in the balance. Allow them some driving courtesies that will facilitate in a smoother journey. Their soul hangs in the balance as you park as well. Reflect to yourself your own attitudes and demeanor during worship. You may think of something to change within yourself when thinking about how newcomers might view you, a believer. Choir directors, instrumentalists and singers, pay attention to your face expressions, how you sing, and how you play as well. With the heart of reaching out to the One Soul, let us all think one more time as we take the shuttle busses to church, wait in line in front of the cafeteria, purchase items from the cafe and sit around our courtyard while eating our lunch. Let us create our own miraculous Easter through these small considerations. I honestly hope that for at least the next week that the only thing that can possibly go wrong is ‘ruining my sermon.’
