목사가 자기가 목회하는 교회 사역 외에 협력하는 선교 단체나 외부 집회, 컨퍼런스 혹은 신학교에서 가르치는 일로 출타할 때가 있습니다. 그러나 목회자가 본 교회를 잠시 떠나 외부 일을 보는 것이 만만치 않아서 한 번 출타하는 김에 밖에서 해야 할 일을 한꺼번에 하고 돌아오려는 경향이 있습니다. 집회 인도를 하러 나가는 김에 선교이사회 모임을 한다든지, 컨퍼런스를 간 김에 휴가를 달아서 한다든지, 신학교에서 가르치는 시간 사이사이에 미뤄놓았던 회의를 하곤 합니다. 저도 본의 아니게 여러 책임을 지다보니, ‘간 김에’ 해야 할 일들을 만들어 소위 일의 효율성을 높이려는 경향이 있습니다. ‘한 번에 한 가지 일만 하는 것은 시간의 사치다’라고 생각하고 반드시 여러 일을 겹쳐서 하는 것은 목사들에게도 이상한 일이 아닙니다.옛날 모 대통령은 껌을 씹으면서 집무를 할 수 없었다고 합니다. 껌을 씹으면 껌만 씹어야 하고, 책을 읽으면 책만 읽어야지 동시에 여러 일을 못 한다고 했습니다. 한 번에 하나밖에 못하는, 요즘 말로 하면 ‘모노태스크’라 할 수 있겠지요. 그러나 바쁜 세상에 한 번에 하나밖에 못하는 것은 비효율적이요, 아니 무능하다고 말할 수 있을지 모르겠습니다. 그래서 우리는 돌 하나를 던져 새 두 마리, 세 마리를 잡으려고 합니다. 음악을 들으면서 청소하고, 빨래를 개면서 드라마 보고, 러닝머신에서 달리면서 TV보고, 운전하면서 성경 암송하고, 기차 타고 출퇴근하면서 책 읽고, 걸어가면서 스마트폰 텍스트하고 인터넷 기사 읽고, 비행기 타고 가면서 설교 준비하고, 출장 가면서 컴퓨터 두들기고, 예배 드리면서 인터넷 서치와 스포츠 업데이트하고, 설교 들으면서 모자란 잠을 보충하고(자면서도 설교 다 들었다고 우기시니깐^^), 이 모든 것들이 어쩌면 멀티태스킹에 익숙한 우리의 자화상이 아닐까 싶습니다.
유튜브 영상에서 중학생들이 친구를 만나러 온 약속 장소에서 인사 후에는 대화가 끊기고 서로 스마트폰을 쓰며 각자 일에 바쁜 모습을 보았습니다. 시간의 효율성이라는 그럴듯한 이름으로 인격적인 관계와 풍성한 교제가 피해를 보고 있다는 생각이 들었습니다. 저도 예배 드리면서 조명, 마이크, 실내온도 등 예배 분위기가 눈에 들어오면 관계자에게 가끔 텍스트를 보내는 경우가 있습니다.나름 수시로 필요에 따라 반응한다고 하지만, 하나님 앞에 저도 친구 만나러 나와서는 스마트폰이나 들여다보고 있는 비인격적 모습이 아닌가 반성하게 됩니다. 멀티태스킹보다 모노태스킹이 점점 더 필요한 시대적 요청이 아닌가 싶습니다. 셀폰 끄고 예배 드립시다!^^

A pastor, at times, will find himself outside his church doors cooperating with missionary organizations, speaking at events, attending conferences or even teaching a seminary class. However, because these outside tasks are not so simple, it is not unordinary to see a pastor bulk these tasks together so he can take care of them with one swing. Grouping a missions board meeting with a speaking arrangement, a vacation while attending a conference and meetings in between teaching seminary classes are examples of such. Because I have many responsibilities, unintentionally I also formed a tendency to try and raise the effectiveness of ‘work’ by doing things while I do other things. Having enough time to do one thing at a time is a luxury so grouping things together to multi-task is not so indifferent from what pastors need to do.
A long time ago, a certain president once expressed that he could not work while chewing gum. He thought that when you are chewing gum, you should only chew gum and when you read to simply read. He was not able to multi-task. Today we coined the term ‘mono-task’ for only being able to do one thing at a time. But it is inefficient, nay, it may border incompetence mono-tasking in such a busy world. This is why we seek to hit two or even three birds with one stone. We listen to music as we clean, watch dramas as we fold our laundry, watch television as we run on our treadmills, memorize Scripture while driving, read books on the train commute to work, text while walking, read articles while we surf the web, prepare sermons on the plane ride, slam on our keyboards on business trips, search on the internet while worshiping, get updates on sports and sleep while listening to a sermon(since you are all so insistent that you listen in your sleep ^^). All of these could be a self-portrait of how used to multi-tasking we all really are.
On Youtube, I saw a video of a few junior high school students that meet each other, exchange greetings, end communication and immediately take out their smartphones to busily take care of their own businesses. I feel that the real damage is done within the fellowship and within interpersonal relationships all for the sake of time efficiency. At times, even while I am worshiping and the lights, microphone, indoor temperature or something needs attention, I send out a text message to those that are responsible for it. I would always think of it as being responsive as needed, but I am more introspective now as I realize that this is not so dissimilar from the impersonal students that meet to only take out their smart phones. It may be a call out from this age that mono-tasking is becoming increasingly more needed than multi-tasking. Turn off that phone and let us worship!^^
