‘다음학교’ 다녀왔습니다
저희 교회가 돕고 있는 한국의 탈북청소년 대안학교인 ‘다음학교’의 이전 기념식에 다녀왔습니다. 시설 확충을 위한 추가 후원을 검토하기 위한 방문이었는데, 믿음으로 추진하는 학교사역이 저의 방문 스케줄과 맞추어 이전 기념식을 하게 되었습니다. 한국 정부와 연결된 공식행사여서 예배형식으로 드리지는 못했지만, 애국가제창과 더불어 시작되는 기념식이 새삼 뜻깊게 다가왔습니다. 2년 전에 방문할 때에는 아이들이 학고방만한 곳에서 지내는 모습이 좀 안쓰러웠는데, 이제 크지는 않지만 좀 편리하게 꾸며진 예쁜 공간에 너무 행복해했습니다. 무엇보다도 양재천이 학교 옆으로 흘러 자연 공간이 느껴지고, 아이들의 기숙사에서 걸어서 10분 거리에 있다는 것이 큰 장점이었습니다. 언제든지 학교에서 공부하고 집으로 돌아가는 길이 편리해져서 맘껏 공부하며 공동체생활 하는데 용이했습니다.
이번 기념식에 귀빈으로 초대된 분 중에 홍영표 통일부장관, 이어령 전 문화부장관과 온누리교회 박종길목사 그리고 BMW 부사장이 계셨습니다. 다음학교는 가장 모범적인 탈북학생 학교로 정부에서 상을 받으며 우수학교로 인정받기 시작했고, 이어령 전 장관은 먼저 천국 간 딸의 이름으로 도서실 시설과 책을 기증하셨습니다. 또한 인상적이었던 것은 독일 자동차회사인 BMW에서 지하 1층에 예배실 및 강의실을 전적으로 리모델링 해준 것입니다. 기념식도 이곳에서 했는데, 약 5, 60명 들어가는 공간에 두 벽면 쪽으로 스타디움식의 좌석을 3단으로 돌려서 많으면 100명도 앉을 수 있었습니다. 프로젝터에 스크린, 에어컨, 예쁜 무대에 조명, 그리고 화재 시 스프링클러 시설까지 꼼꼼히 독일인의 자존심을 걸고 잘 꾸며주셨습니다.
기념식 후, 식사자리에서 어떻게 BMW가 다음학교 후원자가 되었는지 물어보았습니다. 처음에는 회사가 친환경 일에는 후원을 많이 해도, 분단된 남북한의 화합과 통일을 상징하는 다음학교 후원요청에는 거절했다고 합니다. 하지만 유일한 분단국가인 한국에서 비즈니스를 하는 회사가 통일독일 된 경험으로 한반도 통일을 위한 상징적 후원을 다음학교에 하기로 했다는 것입니다. 그것도 한국지사 결정이 아닌 독일 본사 결정으로 진행되었고 독일 총리의 방한 준비로 기념식에는 참석하지 못했지만, 원래 독일대사도 기념식에 참석하려고 했다는 것입니다. 회사 사장의 축사를 대신 전해주는 BMW 부사장은 프로농구 선수같이 키가 저희의 두 배나 되었는데, 진정으로 남북한이 하나 되는 일에 다음학교에서 배출된 창의적 인재들이 주역이 되어줄 것을 말하면서 눈시울을 붉히는데, 미주에 사는 한인 디아스포라로서 많은 도전이 되었습니다. 한국에서는 온누리교회, 조이어스교회 등에서 또한, 미국에서는 저희 교회를 비롯하여 에브리데이교회 등이 협력하여 다음학교를 후원하고 있습니다. 2007년부터 저희 교회에서 후원을 시작하여 올해 10년째 되는 다음학교가 통일시대, 다음시대를 여는 주역이 되기를 축복하며, 성도님들의 기도와 후원에 감사의 말씀을 전합니다.

I had the privilege of attending the Commemoration of Relocation ceremony held by the North Korean defector school (Daum School) that our church is supporting. In all honesty, it was a trip to evaluate and weigh regarding giving more support for an expansion project, but this school that proceeds by faith just happened to match my visitation with their ceremony. Because the ceremony was directly tied with the Korean government we were not able to celebrate with worship, however there was a fresh meaningful feeling as the national anthem was sung as the prelude. When I had visited two years ago when the school was located in Bang-Bae, it was hard to see the kids in such bad conditions, but now being in a quaint beautiful environment comfortably arranged, I can feel the joy of the students. More than anything else, you could feel nature from the streams of the Yang-Jae river that was located 10 minutes away from the students’ dormitory. The convenience of studying anytime to their hearts content at school and being able to go back home makes community life even easier.
This year’s distinguished guests included Young-Pyo Hong, secretary of the ministry of reunification, professor Eo-Lyung Lee, former secretary of the ministry of culture and sports, Reverend Jong-Gil park of all nations church. and even a vice president of BMW automobiles. The school started receiving recognition as an excellent school while being praised as the most exemplary of all defector schools, and professor Eo-Lyung Lee founded the library and donated many books in his daughter’s name who already went to heaven. Another interesting fact was that the worship sanctuary and the lecture halls in the first basement floor was completely remodeled by the German automobile company, BMW. The ceremony was held in this area, and it fits about fifty to sixty people, but if you pull out the bleachers adjacent to the walls, as many as a hundred people can fit. You can truly feel the German pride in the wonderful renovations of sprinkler systems, stage lights, air conditioning units and video projection system.
After the ceremony during our meal together, I inquired as to how BMW became a sponsor of Daum School. At first, I was told that BMW refused the request for support. The company actively supports environmental causes, and although they rejected supporting Daum School that symbolizes harmony and reconciliation between the divided Koreas, they eventually came around to support Daum School with the symbolic idea from the experience of a reunified Germany as a company that does business with the only divided nation in the world. This was not even a decision by the Korean branch, but from the main headquarters. A German ambassador was even set to attend had it not been for the German prime minister’s visit to Korea. The vice president that attended in the president’s stead stood to give a message of congratulations and this vice president doubled everyone’s height and seemed like a professional basketball player. While the tears were forming in his eyes as he confidently stated that the creative minds and talented individuals that Daum School would send out would become the key figures in the reunification of the Koreas, living as Korean diaspora in the States I was deeply challenged. In Korea, All Nations Church, Joyous Church and many others, and in the States, our church, Everyday Church, and many others are supporting Daum School. We started supporting this school in 2007 and as the tenth year approaches, we bless this school to become the driving force that opens up the next generation of the age of reunification.
