요즘 매일성경 본문이 구약성경 아모스인데, 금요일 본문 중에 제 눈길을 사로잡는 구절이 있었습니다. 바로 아모스 5장 24절입니다. “오직 공법을 물 같이, 정의를 하수 같이 흘릴찌로다(개역한글)” 이 말씀을 대하는 순간에 죄송하게도 하나님이 생각난 것이 아니라, 얼마 전 하나님의 부르심을 받은 고(故) 김영삼 대통령이 생각난 것입니다. 서슬 퍼랬던 70~80년대에 불굴의 의지와 믿음으로 군사 독재정권에 맞섰던 그분이 가장 애송하던 성경구절이기 때문입니다. 80년대에 대학을 다녔던 저와 같은 동년배 청년 크리스천들은 그 당시 그의 투박한 음성을 통해 흘러나오던 “공법을 물같이, 정의를 하수같이!”라는 말씀을 붙들고 조국 땅의 민주주의를 꿈꾸며 기도하였습니다.
김영삼 장로님(이하 YS라 부르겠습니다)은 참 많은 재미있는 이야기를 남기신 분입니다. 미국의 클린턴 대통령이 한국을 방문하였을 때에 새벽에 조깅을 하였는데, 당신보다 나이가 어린 클린턴에게 지지 않으려고 빨리 뛰는 바람에 육상경기처럼 달렸다는 일화는 유명합니다. YS가 청와대 인근의 초등학교에 일일명예교사로 봉사하러 갔을 때의 일입니다. 한 어린이가 손을 들고 질문하였습니다. “할아버지는 어렸을 때 대통령이 되기 위해 어떤 꿈을 꾸셨어요?” 그러자 YS 왈, “내는 어릴 때부터 숙면을 취했기에, 꿈같은 것은 꾸지 않았데이!”
꿈 이야기하면, 정유성 목사님의 “큰 꿈은 없습니다!”를 빼놓을 수 없습니다. 정 목사님이 새로운 찬송을 작곡하면, 제가 짓궂게 한 번씩 제동을 겁니다. “목사님, 이번 찬송의 한 두 소절 정도가 왠지 모르게 표절 냄새가 납니다.” 제가 장난친 것이 조금은 부담이 되었던지, 그다음부터 정 목사님이 새 곡을 발표할 때에는 주로 제가 심방 가고 없을 때에 하려고 했다는 이야기가 있습니다.^^ 정 목사님이 작사 작곡하신 찬송들이 한결같이 주옥같지만, 그중에서 제가 제일 좋아하는 것이 바로 “큰 꿈은 없습니다!”입니다. 몇 몇 분들은 미리 소식을 들어 알고 계시는 것처럼, 정목사님은 덴버북부한인장로교회의 담임목사 청빙을 받아서 다음 주면 우리 곁을 떠나게 되십니다. 그런데, 청빙이 결정되고 나서 정목사님이 이런 유머를 던지셨습니다. “하나님께서 정확하게 제가 만든 곡의 가사 그대로 인도하시네요.” 모두들 이게 무슨 소린가 하고 귀를 기울였습니다. ‘큰 꿈은 없습니다!’하지 말고 ‘조금 더 큰 꿈은 있습니다’… 할걸 그랬네요… 이 이야기를 듣고 모두들 한바탕 웃었습니다.
요즘 제가 이 찬송에 완전히 빠졌습니다. 그리고 이 찬송을 부르면서 꿈을 꾸고 있습니다. 찬송 가사 내용 그대로 “맡겨주신 영혼들 그들을 사랑하고 섬기는 것만으로 충분한” 그런 꿈 말입니다. 비록 사람들의 눈에는 작고 소박한 꿈으로 보일지 몰라도 주님이 귀하게 보시면 그것만으로 충분하지 않겠습니까? 덴버로 떠나는 정유성 목사님의 발걸음을 축복합니다!

Our daily QTs have been on the book of Amos, and on Friday’s quiet time lesson, I found a scripture verse that caught my eye. It was Amos 5:24, which says, “But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.” Regretfully, I did not think of God as I read this passage, but I thought of President Young-Sam Kim, who recently went to be with our Lord. It is because this is the scripture verse that during the iron age of the 70’s and 80’s he loved reciting while vigorously fighting against the military dictator regime. Along with many other fellow classmates at the time, being an 80s college student, I remember his rustic chant of, “Let justice roll down like the waters, and righteousness like a stream!” as I prayed for democracy and for my fatherland.
Elder Young-Sam Kim(I will refer to him as YS now) left the world with plenty of intriguing stories. His story of running his heart out as if it is a track meet when jogging early morning with President Clinton is a classic staple of how much he wanted to be victorious against a younger President. There was another time when YS went to an elementary school near ‘The Blue House,’ to serve as a one-day honorable teacher. One young child raised her hand and asked him, “What did you dream as a child to end up becoming the President?” He replied, “My sleep was so deep, I did not have any dreams!”
If we are going to talk about dreams, there’s no chance that we can leave out Pastor You Sung Jung’s “I have no big dream!” Whenever Pastor Jung writes a new song, I always put the brakes on him and joke. I say, “Pastor Jung, some of these lines feels a lot like plagiarism.” My joking may have been a little crass, as afterwards I heard that whenever he is about to release a new song, he does so when I am on a visitation or when I am not in the office. Pastor Jung’s songs are always a masterpiece, but my favorite song of his is, “I have no big dream!” As some of you know, Pastor Jung has received the call to serve as the senior pastor of Korean Church of North Denver and he will be with us no longer. However, after it was confirmed he would serve as the senior pastor, he said this. “Wow, awesome! God perfectly answered to my song!” Everyone was wondering what he meant and paid careful attention. He said, “I sang that I have no big dream, and God gave me a small church to serve… Perhaps if I sang my dream can be a little larger…” Everyone burst into laughter.
I am falling deep into this song these days. As I sing this song, I, myself, dream. Just as the lyrics say, “I am satisfied with loving and serving the souls that you entrusted under my care.” That is my dream. To others, this may seem a small and simple dream, however, I know the LORD is happily looking down, and I am content. God bless you Pastor Jung, and your new adventures in Denver.
