제가 초등학교 때 키우던 애완용 개 ‘해피’가 있었습니다. 종자가 무엇인지 잘 모르지만, 빛나는 하얀 털의 ‘해피’와 동네를 뛰어다니던 기억이 납니다. 그러다가 비가 오면 개집에 들어가 아무리 불러도 나오지 않던 ‘해피’가 오늘 읽은 책 때문에 갑자기 기억이 납니다. 아마 제 생애에 유일하게 길렀던 개라 그런 것 같습니다.
“연탄길”의 작가 이철환씨의 “예수 믿으면 행복해질까?”라는 책에 이런 말이 나옵니다. “강아지 밥그릇에 별이 뜰 수 있었던 건 찌그러진 밥그릇 때문이었습니다. 강아지 밥그릇이 새것이었다면 별은 뜨지 않았을 테니까요. 반짝이는 새 그릇이 별보다 더 반짝이려 할 테니 별이 뜰 수 있었겠습니까?”
한참 비가 내린 후 구름이 갠 으스스한 밤에 빗물이 고인 조그만 개밥그릇에는 별것이 다 담깁니다. 먹다 남은 밥이 씻겨나간 후, 구름이 지나가는 달빛이 담겨 있기도 하고, 또 비가 내리지 않으면 절대 보일 수 없는 별빛도 초롱초롱 개밥그릇에 빠져있습니다. 개밥그릇이 화려하면 별이 보이지 않는다는 작가의 통찰력이 빛이 납니다. 연인들이 노래하는 ‘저 별은 너의 별, 저 별은 나의 별’의 고상함이나 낭만과는 거리가 있지만, 찌그러진 개밥그릇에 담긴 밤하늘의 별은 무엇으로도 표현할 수 없는 따뜻한 사랑의 훈훈함이 있습니다.
한없이 고상하고 높으신 우리 주님께서 십자가를 지시는 모습은 정확하게 개밥그릇에 담긴 별이라고 해도 틀리지 않을 것 같습니다. 찌그러진 개밥그릇같이 아무것도 아닌 우리 죄인들을 위해 십자가 지심으로 은혜의 보혈에 비친 모습은 별보다 더 빛납니다. 별을 담은 개밥그릇처럼 우리 역시 별 같은 주님을 우리 마음에 모셨습니다. 우리의 마음은 늘 이처럼 은혜의 보혈이 담겨 있어야 합니다. 만약 우리의 그릇에 보혈이 마르는 날이 있다면 더이상 별은 비추지 못할 것입니다.
개밥그릇은 개밥을 담습니다. 그러나 인생의 비가 오는 날이면, 별을 담을 기회가 옵니다. 개밥그릇의 가치는 그 그릇에 무엇을 담느냐로 결정됩니다. 그릇이 형편없으면 없을수록 그릇에 담기는 별이 더욱 빛날 것입니다. 겸손한 그릇에 별이 담긴다는 교훈을 배우게 됩니다. 그릇이 아무리 좋고, 새 그릇이라도 그 자랑은 개밥그릇 자랑하는 것에 지나지 않는다는 사실을 기억해야 할 것입니다. 별을 담은 개밥그릇이야말로 우리를 거듭나게 하는 훈훈한 추억입니다. 어릴 때 순수함으로 돌아가는 징검다리이며, 내 밥그릇에서 밤하늘의 별로 가치를 옮겨가는 도약입니다. 낮은 마음에 쏟아지는 사랑의 별빛이 개밥그릇에 담길 때, 비로소 우리는 행복해질 수 있을 것입니다.

When I was in elementary school, I had a pet dog that went by the name of ‘Happy.’ I am not entirely too sure of his breed, but I remember running around the neighborhood with a white-furred, ‘Happy.’ I am able to reminisce about certain events like, whenever it would rain, he would retreat back into the doghouse and no matter how hard I called he would not come out, because of this book I am reading. It is also most likely due to the fact that ‘Happy’ was the only dog I ever raised.
In the book, If you believe in Jesus, will you be happy? written by Chul-Hwan Lee, author of Yuntangil(연탄길), it says, “The reason a star was able to appear in the doggy bowl is precisely because it was bent out of shape… for if the doggy bowl is new, a star would not appear… The new doggy bowl would outshine any star, so how would a star be able to manifest itself?”(roughly translated)
After a heavy amount of rain, when the clouds are spookily subsiding, along with the rain water, many things are piled into the doggy bowl. After the uneaten food gets washed away, you can see the reflection of the cloud passing over the evening moon. Additionally, if it had not rained, it would be difficult to see the shiny bright stars that seem to be dipping deeply into the doggy bowl. The author’s insight into the stars’ reflection being dimmed in a shiny new doggy bowl shines brightly as well. The song, “This star is yours, that star is mine,” that many couples sing is very detached from elegance and romance, but the stars from the night sky that overflow into the old, bent doggy bowl displays an indescribable effect of heartwarming love.
It is not incorrect to say that the image of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in his elegance and in his majesty, carrying the cross for our salvation reflects the image of the doggy bowl containing the stars. We, who are just like the old, bent doggy bowl, have the reflection of the blood of grace that saved us from sin, shining brighter than the stars. Just as the doggy bowl contained the stars, we contain the Lord, Jesus Christ, in our hearts. Our hearts must always contain the reflection of the blood of grace. If our hearts are ever drained of this blood, then we can no longer reflect the bright star that is our Lord Jesus Christ.
Dog food goes into the doggy bowl. But when life gives you rain, it is an opportunity to hold the stars. The worth of the doggy bowl is determined by what goes into it. The worse off the doggy bowl is, the better it can contain the stars. There is a lesson here, that a humble bowl can contain the brightest stars. We must remember that boasting over the new condition of a shiny doggy bowl, no matter how great it is, will not surpass beyond anything but a doggy bowl. The doggy bowl that contains the stars can become our most heartwarming memory of being born again. It is the stepping stone back to the innocence of our childhood, and it becomes the leap from the doggy bowl to the stars in the sky in understanding our worth. When the love light from a humble heart is contained in a doggy bowl, at last we will be able to experience true joy.
